full use was made of the symbolism of the heathen sun cult bound up with this day, in so far as there was recognized in it a symbol of the resurrection, and this led to the circulation of the term Sunday in Christian circles (first attested in Justin’s Apology 1, 67, 3) and to the raising of this day to the status of an official holiday under Constantine the Great1 with his leanings towards syncretism.
